Inmates Bagging Trash in Fall Litter Sweep Inmates from prison facilities across the state are joining the effort to help clean up North Carolina roadways as part of the 2002 fall Litter Sweep. Governor Michael F. Easley issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 16-29 as the fall Litter Sweep in an effort to encourage all citizens and government agencies to take an active role in keeping their communities clean. "The Department of Correction is once again proud to take part in this important effort of helping keep North Carolina roadways clean," said Secretary Theodis Beck. "The inmates who participate in Litter Sweep appreciate the chance to be a part of a team effort and give back to the community." Each year, the Department of Transportation organizes Litter Sweep roadside cleanups during the fall and spring. Adopt-a-Highway volunteers, local governments, schools, churches, businesses, concerned citizens and inmates conduct community cleanups in all 100 counties across the state. During the 2002 spring Litter Sweep the Division of Prisons stepped up its efforts by increasing the hours inmates spent on the roadways. The result: North Carolina inmates cleaned up nearly 7,000 miles of roadways and picked up over 81,000 bags of trash compared to approximately 5,000 miles of roadways and 56,000 bags of trash collected in the 2001 spring Litter Sweep.
