Gates Correctional Center reopens

GATESVILLE – Following the passage of the state budget, Secretary Theodis Beck has directed the Division of Prisons to reopen Gates Correctional Center. Operations at the prison were suspended July 31 in order to reduce expenditures pending the approval of a state budget by the General Assembly.

"We will work quickly to reopen our facility in Gates County and to insure a smooth transition for returning employees," said Secretary Beck.

Employees who were temporarily reassigned to other locations will return to work at the prison Wednesday, Oct. 2. Inmates will be transferred to the prison over the course of the next few weeks.

Gates Correctional Center, in Gatesville, is a minimum-security prison with a capacity of 76 adult males. Opened in the 1930s, Gates was recommended for closure by the Governmental Performance Audit Committee (GPAC) in 1992 to improve the efficient allocation of correctional resources.

Note: More information about the facility is available at http://www.doc.state.nc.us/dop/prisons/gates.htm
