Alvin Newsome named Correctional Officer of the Year Newsome manages the food service operations at Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh, supervising a staff of four food service officers and a crew of inmates assigned to work in the kitchen. He was recognized for his positive leadership and the high standards he sets for his employees and inmate workers. "Alvin Newsome represents the type of employee that is often unrecognized and under appreciated, but is a vital and integral part of the overall operation of the facility," said Superintendent Eileen Cochrane. "Mr. Newsome is an essential member of my management team and he demonstrates the qualities that a true professional should exemplify." Newsome is a 13-year veteran of the Department of Correction. He is a graduate of Calvin S. Brown High School in Winton and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Wake Correctional Center is a minimum-custody prison facility in Raleigh housing approximately 380 adult male inmates. Governor Mike Easley has declared May 4-10 as Correctional Officers’ Week in observance of the important public safety work done by more than 10,000 correctional officers working in North Carolina’s prisons. # # # Editors: A digital photo of Newsome is available by calling the Public Information Office at 919-716-3700 |
