Execution date set for Joseph Bates

RALEIGH - Correction Secretary Theodis Beck has set July 18, 2003 as the execution date for death row inmate Joseph Earl Bates. The execution is scheduled for 2 a.m. at Central Prison in Raleigh.

Bates, 35, was first sentenced to death on March 2, 1991 in Yadkin County Superior Court for the August 1990 murder of Charles Edwin Jenkins. On appeal, the North Carolina Supreme Court awarded Bates a new trial. On November 9, 1994, Bates received the death sentence a second time. He also received a 40-year sentence for one count of kidnapping.

A media tour is scheduled at Central Prison on Monday, July 14. Interested media representatives should arrive at Central Prison’s visitor center promptly at 10 a.m. on the tour date. Warden R.C. Lee will explain the execution procedures. The session will last approximately one hour. This will be the only opportunity to photograph the execution chamber and death watch area before the execution.

Journalists who plan to attend the tour should contact the Department of Correction Public Information Office at 919-716-3700.
