Department of Correction provides recovery assistance after
Isabel Inmate work crews begin work on storm cleanup RALEIGH – Inmate work crews and teams of probation/parole officers are ready to assist with storm recovery and clean up in the wake of Hurricane Isabel. Crews of officers and inmates are responding to needs across eastern North Carolina at the request of emergency management officials. Twenty probation/parole officers have responded to Martin County where they are assisting local law enforcement agencies with patrols. Other officers deployed this afternoon to provide law enforcement assistance for Hertford and Washington county officials. Inmate work crews are clearing storm debris in Roanoke Rapids and Mayesville and assisting the Department of Transportation with clearing roads in Greene County. Other inmate work crews are standing by to respond to additional requests. Local governments requesting law enforcement assistance or inmate labor for cleanup projects should contact their local emergency management agency so that requests can be relayed to the State Emergency Response Team. The Division of Prisons continues to house inmates evacuated from county jails in Dare, Hyde and Chowan counties. Inmates evacuated from the Beaufort and Pamlico county jails returned today. # # # |
