Inmates Help Clean Up
North Carolina’s Roads RALEIGH – Inmates in prison facilities across the state are helping clean up North Carolina roadways as part of the 2003 Spring Litter Sweep. Governor Michael F. Easley has declared April 21-May 5, 2003 as Litter Sweep in an effort to encourage all citizens to take an active role in making their communities cleaner and more beautiful. "Litter Sweep is an opportunity for all North Carolinians to work together for a clean and beautiful North Carolina," said Secretary Theodis Beck. "Inmates appreciate the opportunity to help clean up our roadsides and do something positive for the community." Each year, the Department of Transportation organizes Litter Sweep roadside cleanups during the fall and spring. Adopt-a-Highway volunteers, local governments, schools, churches, businesses, concerned citizens and inmates conduct community cleanups in all 100 counties across the state. During the 2002 Spring Litter Sweep, North Carolina inmates cleaned up over 6,800 miles of roads and picked up more than 81,000 bags of litter.
