Notice of Discharge of untreated
sewage at POLKTON – Anson Correctional Center, located off Prison Camp Road in Polkton, had a discharge of an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 gallons of untreated wastewater on Jan. 8, 2004. The discharge, which was caused by the blockage and subsequent overflow of two manholes, was discovered at 6:00 a.m. and lasted for approximately 15 hours. After the discharge was discovered, the Department of Correction removed the blockage and repaired the problem that caused the discharge. The department also initiated emergency cleanup measures, including spreading lime and installing barriers to contain the discharge. Department of Correction staff members are investigating the possibility that a small amount of the untreated wastewater may have spilled into a pond located on private property adjacent to the prison. Preliminary investigations show that the discharge did not overflow the pond and did not contaminate any other surface waters. This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes, Article 21, Chapter 143.215.1C. # # # |
