Marion Minimum Security Unit dedicates new chapel
MARION, March 2, 2004 - A new chapel was dedicated today at Marion Correctional Institution's Minimum Security Unit. Through the efforts of the Community Resource Council and McDowell Mission Ministries a former storage area was converted to an attractive full-service religious services center.
The dedication was attended by various volunteers, resource council members, and DOC officials. Western Region was represented by Ms. Jackie Townsend. Chaplain Bill Hall of Western Youth Institution was the keynote speaker. Chaplain Khalil Akbar led the benediction. MMSU Chaplain James Cannon conducted an inmate ensemble in a celebration of praise. MCI Administrator Sid Harkleroad commended the approximately 40 volunteers in attendance and staff of MMSU in converting the storage area into a superb religious setting.
MMSU's goal is to provide a ministry that prepares inmates for life beyond incarceration, offers opportunities for spiritual growth, and models decency and high moral standards.
