Former death row inmate dies at Central Prison RALEIGH – Inmate Dock McKoy, 84, who was sentenced to death for two separate murders but had both death sentences overturned, died July 29 at Central Prison of natural causes. McKoy was first convicted of murder in Scotland County in December 1951 for the killing of Raymond Hall. At a new trial, he was found guilty and re-sentenced to 22-28 years. That prison term ended in May 1968. McKoy was convicted and sentenced to death a second time on Aug. 8, 1985 for the murder of Kress Horne, an Anson County sheriff’s deputy. The U.S. Supreme Court vacated that death sentence in 1990, and remanded the case for re-sentencing. McKoy had remained incarcerated since that time waiting to be re-sentenced. His body was released to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill. The Division of Prisons has been unable to locate any of McKoy’s family. # # # |
