Division of Prisons’ eastern office has new leader
He will oversee the management and operations of 14 prisons in a 27-county region that stretches eastward from Wayne County to the coast and southward from the Virginia state line through New Hanover County. Safrit was previously operations manager in the Piedmont Region Office in Kernersville. The appointment was announced by Boyd Bennett, Division of Prisons director, who cited Safrit’s experience and management skills. “Danny is a very good communicator and hard worker,” Bennett said. “His interpersonal skills with Correction staff are top notch, and he treats people fairly.” Safrit graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor of science degree in corrections and sociology in 1982. The same year, he began his career in the Department of Correction as a program assistant I at Guilford Correctional Center. Safrit advanced through the ranks, being named superintendent at Sandy Ridge Correctional Center in 1990 and the Piedmont Region Office operations manager in 1999. In addition to becoming familiar with the Eastern Region Office staff and operations, Safrit said he will also initially concentrate on ensuring the on-schedule opening of two new 1,000-bed maximum custody correctional institutions in 2006 – Maury (in Greene County) and Bertie. Safrit enjoys sports events and house repair and yard work. He and his wife, Angela, have one child. The family will relocate to Greenville from Greensboro. # # # Editor: A digital copy of the photo is available in color or black-and-white by calling 919-716-3700. |
