Notice of Discharge of
Untreated Sewage POLKTON – Brown Creek Correctional Institution, located off Prison Camp Road in Polkton, had a discharge of an estimated 80,000 gallons of untreated wastewater on July 29, 2005. Pump station equipment failure caused the discharge, which lasted approximately 7 ½ hours. After the discharge was discovered, Department of Correction employees repaired the problem that caused the discharge, completing work at 8:25 am. The Department also initiated emergency cleanup measures, including spreading lime and cleaning out an excavation pit where the majority of the wastewater had accumulated. Preliminary investigations indicate that a small portion of the discharge may have entered a drainage ditch and made its way into Brown Creek during the heavy rain event occurring at the time. No fish kill resulting from this discharge has been noted. This notice was required by North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1.C(b). # # # |
