Inmates help clean roadsides during Fall Litter Sweep RALEIGH – Inmates from prison facilities across the state collected 67,116 bags of litter from North Carolina roadways as part of the 2006 Fall Litter Sweep, according to final results of the Litter Sweep released today by Director of Prisons Boyd Bennett. "Litter Sweep presents an opportunity for all North Carolinians to work together for a clean and beautiful North Carolina," said Bennett. "Hundreds of inmates worked hard to clean up our roadsides and do something positive for the community." A total of 96,661 inmate labor hours were contributed to litter reduction cleaning 6,588 miles of roadway during the two-week cleanup period of Sept. 16-30. Each year, the Department of Transportation organizes Litter Sweep roadside cleanups during the fall and spring. Adopt-a-Highway volunteers, local governments, schools, churches, businesses, concerned citizens and inmates conduct community cleanups in all 100 counties across the state.
