New superintendent named for state prison

JACKSON Neal Vaughan, a 26-year corrections veteran, has been named the new superintendent of Odom Correctional Institution by Boyd Bennett, Division of Prisons director. Vaughan had been Odom assistant superintendent of custody and operations since 2000.

As superintendent, Vaughan will be responsible for the operations and activities of the medium security prison that has 458 male inmates and 290 correctional officers and staff.

Beginning his career at Odom CI as a correctional officer in 1980, Vaughan rose in the program ranks to program director in 1986-90, and in 1990-94 he was program director at the former Caledonia-Odom complex. Vaughan then was assistant superintendent at Halifax Correctional Center until it closed in 1996, at which time Vaughan was named program director at Nash Correctional Institution.

Vaughan has an associate degree from Chowan College and a bachelor of science degree in physical education and political science from Atlantic Christian College (now named Barton College) in Wilson.

He and his wife have a child, and he enjoys weight lifting and yard work.

Vaughan succeeds Lawrence Solomon, who was named superintendent at Caledonia Correctional Institution.
