Rotary Clubs refurbish children’s visiting area at women’s prison

RALEIGH – A dedication ceremony will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m. at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, 1034 Bragg Street, for a renovated room where inmate mothers can spend time with their children.

The Mothers and Their Children (MATCH) program enables women incarcerated in the prison facility to spend quality time with their children.  To qualify for the program, the women must be serving a sentence of at least seven years, have no infractions and agree to take monthly parenting classes.  Currently there are 57 inmates who participate in the program and many of them submitted design ideas for the room’s renovation.

Three area Rotary Clubs donated $6,000 and members worked along with inmates to update and brighten the 12-year-old, 35-by-25 foot room.  Rotary members and inmates painted the room, hauled away old furniture, placed new artwork and assembled new tables, shelves, bookcases and desks.

Participating Rotary Clubs were North Raleigh, Chapel Hill-Carrboro-Sunrise and Cary-Kildare.

Rotary members will present a plaque to Warden Annie Harvey and Boyd Bennett, director of the Division of Prisons.
