Carteret prison has new superintendent

NEWPORT - Lewis J. Gray is the new superintendent at Carteret Correctional Center, a minimum custody prison that houses 300 inmates and employs 73 officers and administrative staff members.

Gray succeeds Michael Hardee, who was promoted to superintendent of Hyde Correctional Institution. Gray had been assistant superintendent for custody and operations at Wayne Correctional Center since January.

Beginning his career as a correctional officer at Greene Correctional Institution in 1994, he rose through the ranks at the Division of Prisons’ Craven and Maury facilities. He was assistant superintendent for custody and operations at Carteret Correctional from 2007 to January 2010.

Gray has an associate of applied science degree in law enforcement technology from Pitt Community College and an Advanced Corrections Certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
