Haywood prison has new superintendent

WAYNESVILLE - Donnie Watkins is the new superintendent of Haywood Correctional Center, a minimum custody prison that houses 128 inmates and employs 44 officers and administrative staff members.

Succeeding the retired Matthew Jones, Watkins had been assistant superintendent at Haywood Correctional since 2003. Watkins correctional career began in 1990 at Craggy Correctional Institution, and he progressed through the ranks at the Foothills, Marion and Mountain View correctional institutions.

 A graduate of Swain High School, Watkins has attended Southwestern Community College.
