Pasquotank escapee captured in New York

RALEIGH – George Johnson, the North Carolina minimum custody prison inmate who escaped on Feb. 8, is in the custody of the New York authorities after his arrest for an alleged purse snatching Wednesday in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The N.C. Department of Correction is preparing to have Johnson, 38, extradited. He faces a grand larceny charge in New York.

Johnson was an inmate in the minimum security unit at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City. He was serving a six- to eight-month sentence for speeding to elude arrest and receiving a stolen vehicle. His expected release date was June 28.

When Johnson escaped, he was on a work assignment at the N.C. Department of Transportation’s maintenance yard in Perquimans County.
