Ennis Oates named administrator at Pender Correctional

BURGAW - Ennis Oates has been named the new administrator at Pender Correctional Institution, a medium custody prison that houses 765 male inmates and employs 312 officers and other staff members. 

Succeeding the retired Michael Bell, Oates was previously superintendent of Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro, serving there since 2007. He began his 35-year career with the Department of Correction in 1975 as a correctional officer at Central Prison, and has also been superintendent at Wayne and New Hanover correctional centers.

Oates was the Division of Prisons Superintendent of the Year for 2010. He was also a finalist for the John Larkins Award, which recognizes employee efforts to improve human relations in state government.

He is a graduate of Smithfield/Selma High School, and served in the U.S. Army. He and his wife have two children.
