 Prison Program Description: Private Alcohol Drug Treatment Center

PurposeThe treatment provides inmates with drug alcohol problems an opportunity to engage in treatment, recovery and continuing care. The centers are designed to provide the necessary information, counseling and instructional guidance by a multi-disciplinary treatment team. The centers assist the inmate in seeking to abstain from the use of drugs and alcohol and to establish positive life skills for a successful return to the community.
Criteria for Participation

Adult prison inmates

  • 19 years of age or older
    in minimum custody level I or II

Inmates must meet one or more of the following:

  • documented history of primary drug or alcohol problems;
  • an axis one diagnosis of a drug or alcohol problem;
  • score of 3 to 13 on the Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test.

Inmates not currently in need of inpatient mental health or medical care

Inmates identified with a minimum of six months and a maximum of 20 months before a parole eligibility or release date

Inmate must not have pending detainers

Inmate must not have a record of escape

Inmate must not be serving sentences for serious assaultive or violent crimes, child abuse, sex crimes or predatory crimes.

Not serving a current sentence for a crime that requires DNA testing

Program OperationEach treatment center will provide inmates an initial four weeks of intensive integrated modules incorporating substance abuse education and treatment. Other components will include work and study programs.

After completion of the initial phase of treatment components, inmates will progress to other phases of treatment to include vocational assessments, on the job training, communication skills, social and family integration and will normally conclude with the inmates release from prison. The duration of the program could range from six to twelve months for completion.

  • religious services
  • family leave
  • therapeutic services
  • work release
