RALEIGH - The N.C. State Legislature has instructed the Department of Correction to close two prisons.

Alamance Correctional Center in Graham will close by Oct. 1 and Scotland Correctional Center in Wagram will close by Nov. 1. The two minimum custody prison units, which have a combined capacity of 109 beds, were recommended for closure by the Governmental Performance Audit Committee in the early 1990s to improve the efficient allocation of correctional resources.

"As it has done in the past, the Department will make every effort to find suitable positions at nearby facilities for the employees at the units involved," said Secretary Theodis Beck. "The Department of Correction is committed to ensuring the safety of North Carolina’s citizens in the most efficient manner possible."

The inmates assigned to the two prison units will be transferred to various prison facilities across the State.

Alamance and Scotland were two of 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the late 1930s to house inmates who worked building roads.
