Operations Suspended at Two Prisons RALEIGH- Correction Secretary Theodis Beck is suspending operations at Gates and Blue Ridge correctional centers effective July 31. "The current budget crisis requires that steps be initiated to reduce expenditures and we must continue to look for ways to improve efficiency," said Secretary Beck. Gates Correctional Center, near Gatesville, is a minimum-security prison for adult males. Gates was recommended for closure by the Governmental Performance Audit Committee (GPAC) in the early 1990s to improve the efficient allocation of correctional resources. Blue Ridge Correctional Center is in Newland and is a minimum-security prison for males age 18 to 30. The inmates assigned to the two prison units will be transferred to various prison facilities across the state. Note: More information about each prison facility is available at http://www.doc.state.nc.us/dop/list/county.htm |
