Chambers Retires from Sanford Correctional Center

SANFORD – After 29 years of service, Harry Chambers has retired as superintendent of Sanford Correctional Center. More than 120 friends, family, and co-workers gathered at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center to honor Chambers at a luncheon on May 31.
Master of Ceremonies Keith Hester told the audience “this is my oldest
friendship” referring to his and Supt. Chambers’ friendship dating back to
their days at McCain Correctional Center (now Hoke Correctional Institution).
Boyd Bennett, DOP Support Services director, praised Chambers for running “one
of the cleanest and finest facilities in the state.” He went on to say that
Chambers would never take credit for the facility but instead, gave credit to
the staff of the facility.
After the speakers told of their work experiences with Chambers, several from the audience told stories of their friendship with him. He was presented several gifts including a Certificate of Appreciation signed by Governor James B. Hunt.
Chambers said during his remarks that he will certainly miss the people he has
worked with and the friendships he has made through the years.
Chambers worked much of his career in programs at Hoke Correctional Center
before transferring to Sanford Correctional Center as program director. Later,
he became superintendent at Richmond Correctional Center before being promoted
to superintendent at Sanford.
Chambers said now that he’s retired, he will have more time to spend with his
wife, Treater who retired from the Department three years ago. Chambers and his
wife have four children and six grandchildren, all of whom attended the
luncheon.
