GENERAL INFORMATION - NORTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION

ORGANIZATION: The Department of Correction is composed of two main operating divisions; the Division of Prisons and the Division of Adult Probation and Parole. Support sections include Human Resource Management, which is responsible for personnel matters and training; Central Engineering, which provides design and maintenance support for the Department's prison facilities; and Correction Enterprise, which employs inmates to generate income by supplying products and services to other state government units. The Parole and Post Release Supervision Commission, consisting of five Governor appointees, selects inmates to be released by parole.

Pasquotank Correctional Institution opened during 1996 with 864 beds at a cost of $36,401,000.
Three institutions completed additions or renovations with 608 beds added at a cost of $14,637,000.
Nine new institutions were under construction on 1/1/97 and 25 institutions were undergoing additions and renovations on 1/1/97 to add a total of 5,540 beds at a cost $160,760,000.
The estimated average cost per bed for new construction for a medium security bed is $32,495.
The estimated average cost per bed for new construction for a minimum security bed is $19,942.
