HIGHLIGHTS
- On June 30, 1996, the North Carolina Division of
Prisons population was 30,876.
- On June 30, 1996, there were 28,019 felons and
2,634 misdemeanants in prison including 1,718 prisoners
housed out of state.
- The prison population increased by 14.1% during
the fiscal year.
- During the fiscal year 1995-96 there were 15,903
felon admissions
and 7,033 misdemeanant admissions
to North Carolina prisons.
- During the fiscal year 1995-96 there were 19,074
releases from North Carolina prisons.
- On June 30, 1996, the North Carolina Division of
Adult Probation and Parole had the responsibility for
supervising 115,992 offenders. These offenders consisted
of 100,537 for probation only, 13,395 for parole only,
and 2,060 for both probation and parole.
- On June 30, 1996, 102,597 offenders had an
obligation for probation supervision.
- The total number of entries to probation
supervision in 1995-96 was 51,544.
- During the fiscal year 1995-96, there were 45,127
removals from probation supervision.
- The most common crime for entries onto probation
during the fiscal year 1995-96 was Driving While Impaired
with a total of 10,225.
- The overall revocation rate for offenders on
probation supervision, including those who elected
to serve their active sentences, was
31%.
- On June 30, 1996, 15,455 offenders had an
obligation for parole supervision.
- The total number of entries to parole was 10,141.
- During the Fiscal Year of 1995-96, there were
15,253 removals from parole supervision.
- The overall revocation rate for parolees was 31%.
