Spotlight on Wayne Correctional Center - page 2

Richard Christman is the assistant superintendent for programs. He’s proud of the Fatheread program the prison has developed. Christman has been at Wayne for five years and has put in 16 years with DOC. Annette Simmons was the fourth person hired to work at Wayne. She has served as the administrative officer for 21 years. She remembers working out of DHR buildings as they hired staff and readied the facility to serve as a prison. Robert Hines remembers growing up down the street from the prison, watching the inmate baseball games. His dad worked at Cherry Hospital. After a 21-year career in DOC, Hines is Wayne’s assistant superintendent for operations. He worked at Greene and Eastern before moving to Wayne two and a half years ago.
Hugh Jones is assistant superintendent over Wayne’s minimum-security unit, the former Goldsboro Correctional Center. Jones began his career in corrections at Central Prison in 1977. The next year he transferred to Goldsboro where he worked his way up to lieutenant. He worked as an assistant unit manager at Eastern Correctional Institution before returning to Goldsboro as assistant superintendent in 1987.
Lt. Robert Kennedy and Lt. Murle Lewis make sure Wayne runs smoothly day in and day out. Kennedy started out as a correctional officer at Central Prison in 1979. Kennedy transferred to Wayne in 1982. For a time, he was the only lieutenant there. Now his main concern is security. Away from the office, he is a country music singer who works private parties and some clubs. Lewis began his career as a correctional officer at Wayne 15 years ago and worked his way up through the ranks to sergeant in 1988 and lieutenant in 1995.
