C. PROBATION POPULATION

2. Population by Crime Type

On June 30, 1996, the probation population totaled 102,597 and consisted of the following Crime Types:

• Violent crimes accounted for 14,248 (14%) of the population.

- the highest population in this crime type was Assault which totaled 9,863 and accounted for 69% in total violent crimes.

• Property crimes accounted for 35,080 (34%) of the year-end population.

- the highest population in this crime type was Larceny with a total of 12,490 and accounted for 36% in total property crimes.

• Public Order crimes, including non-trafficking drug crimes and driving while impaired, accounted for 52,418 (51%) of the population.

- the most common crime in this crime type was Driving While Impaired with a total of 20,114 and accounted for 38% in total public order crimes.
