As an administrative probation and parole officer in Dare County, Paul Pollock spends a lot of his time at the courthouse in Manteo. He attends all sessions of district court except for when superior court is in session. It’s his job to processes the probationers by explaining the judgement, giving instructions on their payment plan and explaining how to report to their probation officers. He also completes the OPUS intake sheet and takes pictures of the probationers. In addition, he has his own caseload of 60 out-of-state probationers, usually people who came to the Outer Banks from other states on vacation.

Karen Garriss is the chief for Unit A in Dare County. She said one of the good things about working in Dare County is that the probationers work and are able to pay restitution since there are so many construction and waitressing jobs available.

Tarra Griffin is a probation and parole officer II in Dare County. Griffin said an interesting aspect about Dare County is that each small town has its own police department for a total of five local police departments. "We all know each other real well, so if we have to go out at night, we can call them up to help. It makes our job easier. We all share information and are able to get a lot more done that way."

Kelli McClurkin was recently promoted to PPO II. Originally from Indiana, she had a cousin who used to come down to the Outer Banks in the summer and decided it would make a good place to live. "I love it here," she said. "I have a small office, but I can see the ocean from my window."
