Joe Mason was hired at DART- Wayne the day she graduated from East Carolina University at the age of 50. She is the first female staff member to work in DART, and she is well loved by the staff and inmates. She is full of energy and good humor. In her spare time, Mason volunteers at the Charles B. Aycock birthplace dressed in period costume while giving quilting demonstrations. Bruce Mitchell said he was a kid with a lot of ambition. He wanted to be a great speaker like Martin Luther King or John F. Kennedy. He wanted to make a difference in society. "I never knew I’d be making a difference today like this," Mitchell said. He had spoken in schools and various groups about drugs and alcohol. He said most chemically-dependent people lose sight of the big picture, and they have a fear of failure. "Happiness is there if you just look at it from a different perspective," he said.
